Hillcats Control Play in 3-0 Season-Opening Win
September 1, 2017
CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team controlled the contest for the full 90 minutes in a convincing 3-0 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State in the season opener on Thursday (Aug. 31) at Soldier Field.
The new-look Hillcats, which featured 11 newcomers in the starting lineup, held position and spent most of the game in the Rangers' half.
RSU put pressure on early, and Maggie Brown nearly made it 1-0 in the early moments, but her shot in the third minute of the game hit the post.
RSU went up, 1-0, in the 36th minute when a deflection from Melissa Cardenas went right to the feet of Daisy Cardona. The senior transfer tapped in the goal for the early advantage.
The navy and red added two more goals in the second half. Hannah Mushisky posted her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute in her first appearance as a Hillcat. She fired a shot to the far right corner to beat the NWOSU goalkeeper. Alexis Pryor, who led the Hillcats in goals in 2016, continued her goal-scoring ways with a tally in the 74th minute to increase the margin to 3-0.
For the 90 minutes, the Hillcats controlled the game, holding a large advantage in shots and shots on target along with possession. In the first half, RSU registered 12 shots and limited the Rangers to only two. NWOSU never challenged RSU goalkeeper Taylor Sargent, who needed to make only one save. The defense of the Cats stopped the Rangers from attempting any shots in the second half, while the navy and red totaled seven for a 19-2 edge in the contest.
In her first start, Sargent earned the shutout win in goal. She played all 90 minutes and made one save.
The Hillcats go on the road for the only time in the first six games on the season at East Central on Saturday (Sept. 2) at 2 p.m. in Ada, Okla. Live stats will be available for the contest.
