Artists keep Native American culture alive

George Curtis Levi travels all over the U.S. displaying his art and teaching youth art from the Native American perspective. His work is featured during September at the Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva.

One keeps the old traditions alive while the other documents the continuation of Native American culture today. Husband and wife George and Heather Levi of Mustang are immersed in their culture and their art.

George Curtis Levi, who grew up in the communities of Geary, Concho and El Reno, is a full-time artist. He spends a lot of time on Ledger Art, a popular 19th century form that depicts the daily life of the Cheyenne ceremonies, hunting and battles. He calls it history in motion.

George is a member of the Southern Cheyenne Tribe of Oklahoma but also claims Southern Arapaho and Sioux descent...
