Southwestern Splits on Day Two

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern closed out its opening weekend of competition similarly to its first day, opening it with a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-International before closing out the South Central Classic with a 3-1 loss to Dallas Baptist at Bloomer Sullivan Arena on Saturday.The split keeps the season record even at 2-2 heading into week two which consists of a Sept. 8-9 road trip to Kearney, Neb. For the Nebraksa-Kearney Fall Classic."For us," said head coachBrianna Barry, "We showed a lot of potential, and that is the biggest thing for our team. We got to play a lot of freshman. So, the girls got to experience their first college game, which is always terrifying because the pace us completely different. We are proud of the girls for the way they stepped up because where we were last year to now, we are taking the right steps to continue the process that we had. It was tough Central Missouri was a really close match, but we didn't roll over and die, which is always a bonus. Then our Dallas Baptist match, you know very strong competition, but we were able to push through and I think we learned a lot from this weekend."In the opener the Savage Storm managed to get everyone some action, with the offense paced against TAMIU byArianna Bakerwho finished with 10 kills, whileTaylor Robinsonadded eight andAbby Jamesonchipped in five.Alissa Bensondished out 20 assists while also adding four kills and 11 digs.DefensivelyCaitlin Cosbyled all defenders with 12 digs, while Benson was next in line with 11.Baker also posted three blocks, while Robinson added two.The first set was the closest as the Dustdevils used a late rally to close the count to within five points but a Robinson kill and a TAMIU error would seal a 25-18 win.The Storm answered a 3-0 Dustdevil run in the second with 10-straight points and never looked back en route to a 25-15 win in set two.After briefly falling behind in the third set an 11-3 run midway through the set regained the advantage as SE cruised to a 25-17 win in the set.The nightcap was a battle from beginning to end with Southeastern able to put up big numbers, but also unable to limit mistakes enough to hold for a win against DBU.Jameson piled up 17 kills to lead a trio of players in double figures, joined by Baker with 12 and Robinson with 11. SE finished with 57 kills in the four-set match, but was stung by 35 attack errors.Benson piled up 47 assists while adding three kills and nine digs.Cosby was again a force on the back row with 29 digs, while Jameson wrapped up a double-double with 16.Baker also added four blocks, while Jameson and Robinson chipped in two each.The Storm took set one 25-21 on the strength of a late run, erasing a 21-20 deficit with five-straight points, including three Jameson kills, to win 25-21.Set two got away from SE early as DBU pulled ahead and never looked back while evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 win.Southeastern was stuck player catch up much of the third set as well, closing to a 22-19 deficit late, but were unable to close out the rally in a 25-21 loss, falling behind 2-1.The Storm rallied in the fourth set and erased a two-point gap with five-straight points to go up 17-14, and later clawed to a 19-19 tie, but the Patriots six of the match's last eight points to hand SE a 25-21 loss in the set and a 3-1 loss in the match.
