7th-grader in Austin arrested for gun in backpack

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a seventh-grader has been arrested at his school in northwest Austin after a loaded 9 mm pistol was found in his backpack.

Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody says no one was hurt or threatened.

The student, attending a middle school in the Round Rock Independent School District, was taken Friday to a juvenile justice center.

The school's principal, Paige Hadziselimovic, has sent an email to parents saying another student reported that the weapon was in the backpack. Police then found the gun.
