Lady Muleriders Suffer A Pair of Losses on Saturday at the SEU Hilltopper Classic

September 10, 2017

AUSTIN, Texas- The Lady Mulerider Volleyball team concluded play at the Hilltopper Classic on Saturday after dropping a pair of matches to Black Hills State (22-25, 18-25, 18-25) and Midwestern State (20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 17-25). Seven Powers was the offensive catalyst for SAU averaging a .301 attack percentage as she totaled for 26 kills on the day, 11 in match one and 15 in match two. The first set saw 14 tie scores where SAU came out on top for six of those and paced a close-scoring contest throughout, but a pair of offensive errors from SAU provoked a 25-23 BHSU win. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early advantage in the second set and held a steady lead to a final decision of 25-18. The Lady Muleriders trailed by five in two different parts of the final set where they battled to bring themselves within a one point deficit on both occasions, but four errors in the home stretch of the game aided the Yellow Jackets' 6-0 run to secure the sweep. After dropping the first two sets to Midwestern State in the second match, SAU made a run in set three to avoid the sweep, but suffered the eventual loss. In SAU's victorious third set, they made a 9-1 run to take a 19-10 advantage over MSU. The Mustangs retaliated shortly after as they scored 10 consecutive points to steal the lead, 22-21, but an attack error halted the Mustang's momentum tying the scores at 22-all. A pair of kills from Powers and Madi Pfeifer accounted for the game-winning points in that set with a 26-24 final score, but SAU's celebration was cut short as they dropped the final set, 17-25. The Lady Muleriders open conference play at their home court on Tuesday for a home-opening match against GAC opponent Arkansas Tech scheduled for a 6 p.m. start inside the W.T. Watson Center.
