Ladybugs lose first game of districts to Newkirk 3-1

The Alva Ladybugs varsity softball team lost a close game in the first of two district playoffs Thursday at Newkirk. Alva was tied 1-1 with the Lady Tigers going into the top of the eighth inning. Then Newkirk's Kristina Shikles doubled off a Camryn Wren pitch, driving in one run.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Shay Cushenbery struck out 11 for Newkirk while Wren sat down five for the Ladybugs.
The Tigers took an early lead in the first inning. With one out, Tiger Kaitlyn Dye drove in one run when she singled. In the bottom of the sixth, Alva tied things up at one.
Alva collected eight hits in the game. Hallie Durkee, Aspen Warren and Wren each had multiple hits. Durkee led the Ladybugs with three hits in four at bats.
Newkirk had ten hits. Haiden Huster, Dye and Jacee Swope each had two hits for the Tigers.
The teams were scheduled to face-off in another game at 4 p.m. Thursday in the best two out of three series at Newkirk.
