Champions! Harding Men's Golf Wins Holiday Inn Express Classic on Second Playoff Hole

October 12, 2017

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – In its previous two tournaments, Harding men's golf raised eyebrows with two top-five finishes. Tuesday, the Bisons got everyone's attention by winning the 20-team Holiday Inn Express Classic, hosted by Missouri Western State at the St. Joseph Country Club.

Before Tuesday, Harding men's golf had never won a tournament with more than 11 teams, and its last team title came at the 2014 Natural State Classic, an 11-team event hosted by Harding at Red Apple Country Club in Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Harding shot 291 and 290 in the first two rounds and followed that with a 295 Tuesday in 40-degree, misting weather conditions. The 878 total was the sixth-best 54-hole score in program history and set up a playoff with host Missouri Western.

In the playoff, both teams play all five players and all five scores count. The teams tied at 2 over on the first hole, but Harding claimed the title with a four-stroke advantage on No. 2. The Bisons shot 2 under with birdies from Cameron Murry and Mason Banger. Missouri Western shot 2 over.

Banger placed third individually, shooting 2-over 213 for the tournament. It was his second top-five finish and his third top-10 in four events this season. Murry tied for 10th at 6-over 219, his third career top-10 and first of the season.

Gregor MacIntosh tied for 17th overall at 8-over 221.

Central Missouri's John Bonaobra was the individual champion, shooting 2-under 211 to win by three strokes.
