LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Two Topeka men have been charged in a shooting that killed three people and wounded two others in Lawrence but police are looking for more suspects.

Ahmad Malik Rayton, 22, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon. Dominique Jaquez McMillon, 19, was charged with aggravated assault and battery.

The shooting happened early Oct. 1 as people were leaving bars, concerts and other events on the main downtown Lawrence street. About 100 people witnessed the shooting, which police said was caused by an earlier altercation.

Lawrence police Capt. Adam Heffley did not explain at a news conference Tuesday why neither man was charged with murder, saying "I think the two people we have in custody are accurately charged." Rayton is being held on $1 million bond and McMillon's bond is $25,000.

More arrests are expected and Heffley asked witnesses to contact police.

"The beginnings of this case involved 100-plus people on the scene," Heffley said. "We're working to identify everyone."

He declined to release further information on what caused the shootings.

Leah Elizabeth Brown, 22, of Shawnee; Tremel Dupree Dean, 24, of Topeka; and Colwin Lynn Henderson, 20, of Topeka, all died in the shooting. Two other Topeka residents were injured.

Dean's brother, T'Juan Dean, told The Kansas City Star that Rayton is a cousin.

Brown's mother, Gretchen Brown, said she was pleased with the work of the Lawrence police department but saddened that the suspects were so young.

"I'm just sad, is this our society? That's not the way of life," she said. "Fifty years ago someone would've walked away with a black eye and now instead there are innocent victims that are dead."

McMillon is facing four felony drug charges in Shawnee County District Court and was out on bond at the time of the shooting, according to court records.

Rayton pleaded guilty in September 2014 in Shawnee County to felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor child endangerment charges and was sentenced to supervised probation. He was released from that supervision in August.
