Estimated 150 people eat at first Meat Cook-off at Kiowa's Fall Fest

These are the winners of Kiowa's first Meat Cook-off contest during the Fall Fest Sunday: (from left) first place and the People's Choice, Brian Nielsen, who won $100 and a commemorative apron; second place, Tom Summers, who won $75; third place, John Schupbach, who won $50.

The inviting aroma of charcoal and pellet grills wafted down Main Street in Kiowa during the first Meat Cook-off during Kiowa's Fall Fest on a warm yet cool-in-the-shade absolutely perfect fall day that saw a high in the 70s.

There were ribs, chicken, turkey, brisket, smoked bologna, burnt ends (of roast) and more delicious meats prepared for the contest. Fifteen men entered the contest with some cooking at Kiowa's Centennial Park on Main Street and other chefs preparing their entry at home and bringing it downtown.

About 5 p.m., there was a long line of hungry people waiting on the judges to...
