USGS reports small earthquakes continue in central Oklahoma

November 2, 2017

HENNESSEY, Okla. (AP) — A series of small to moderate earthquakes continue to rattle an area of central Oklahoma.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports seven quakes since Tuesday south of Hennessey in Kingfisher County, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) northwest of Oklahoma City.

The most recent earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 3.1 and struck at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday. The largest was a magnitude 4.1 that struck at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Five smaller temblors of magnitude 3.0 or below were recorded Tuesday.

No injury or significant damage is reported.

Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years — many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and natural gas production operations. State regulators have directed oil and gas producers to close some wells and reduce injection volumes in others.
