High school girl seeks state office; first female in race

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The first female candidate running for statewide office in Kansas this year has made her bid for secretary of state official — even though she's just 17 years old.
The Hutchinson News reports that Democrat Lucy Steyer, of the Kansas City suburb of Lenexa, named her father as campaign treasurer on Tuesday.
The high school senior is the sixth teenage candidate running for statewide office in Kansas this year. The other five teens are boys and running for governor.
