Wonder Boys withstand late run to defeat Rangers

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Behind 16 first-half points from Trevin Woods and 18 second-half points from Montrell Williams, the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys handed Northwestern Oklahoma State its first loss of the season on Saturday. Tech defeated the Rangers, 86-83, with Woods scoring a season-high 20 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Arkansas Tech (6-1, 3-1 GAC) netted its first five shots of the contest, four of which coming from behind the three-point line.

The Wonder Boys maintained their lead throughout the first half, reaching a double-digit lead on a layup by Leonardo Edwards to put Tech ahead, 21-11, with 12:00 to play in the period.

Northwestern Okla. (6-1, 3-1 GAC) slowly cut into Arkansas Tech's lead, and a 5-0 by the Rangers cut their deficit to 29-27 with 6:28 left in the first half. The Wonder Boys responded, however, with an 11-0 run to establish a 40-27 lead with 3:20 before the break.

Tech's largest lead of the half came on a three-pointer by Mason Cline that put the Wonder Boys ahead, 45-30, with 1:19 remaining.

Two free-throws by Trevin Woods to end the first half allowed Tech to take a 47-36 advantage into the final 20 minutes.

In the second half, Arkansas Tech increased its lead to 48-67 with an 8-2 run, with all eight points coming from Montrell Williams. One minute later, the Wonder Boys' reached a lead of 20 points on a fast break dunk by Williams.

With 7:39 left in regulation, NWOSU used a 16-0 run to pull within five points. Tech was held scoreless for over four minutes, but a layup by Harris Brown with 4:08 remaining ended the drought and put the Wonder Boys head, 79-72.

The Rangers continued closing in on the Wonder Boys, and with 1:11 to play, NWOSU pulled within three points. Arkansas Tech knocked down 3-4 free-throws in the final minute of the play to withstand the run and escape with the 86-83 win.

NOTABLES

With the win, Arkansas Tech hands the Rangers their first loss of the season, and the Wonder Boy's increase their win streak to a GAC-leading four games.

Arkansas Tech shot 51 percent from field-goal range in the victory, while holding NWOSU to 47 percent on field goals and 28 percent from deep.

Woods provided the spark in the first half, scoring 16 points on 5-6 field goals. He ended the contest with a game-high 20 points on 7-9 shooting.

Williams finished with 18 points for the game, all coming in the second half. Harris Brown added 11 points and four assists, and RJ Glasper followed with 10 points and a season-high five assists.
