Hot Shooting Propels Fort Smith Past Henderson 76-60

December 7, 2017

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Arkansas-Fort Smith got out to a hot start on Tuesday night by shooting 65.6 percent in the first half and never looked back, as it led from start to finish to defeat Henderson State 76-60 in the Duke Wells Center.

The Lady Lions opened the game on a 10-0 run which they then extended out to 26-9 late in the first quarter. Two 3-pointers from Haleigh Henson in the last minute of the period helped Henderson cut the deficit to 29-15 after one, but Fort Smith did not let up in the second and stretched its lead to 47-30 at the break.

In the third quarter, Fort Smith pushed the lead out to 62-38 at the 3:13 mark, but the Reddies showed fight and used an 18-6 run, which featured 10 points from Pink Jones, over the next eight minutes of gameplay to cut the lead down to 68-56 with 5:08 to play. Henderson would come no closer, though, as the Lady Lions answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to put the game out of reach for the Reddies.

Henson, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1000th career point this past weekend, led Henderson with 17 points on five 3-pointers. Jones added 13, 10 of which came in the big late run, with six rebounds and four assists. The Reddies forced Fort Smith into 27 turnovers on the day but shot just 38.2 percent from the field compared to 58.2 percent for the Lady Lions. The loss drops Henderson to 4-4 on the season and snaps a three-game win streak.

The Reddies return to action this Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center against Bacone College.
