There is finally some chilly weather, but compared with Antarctica, it’s a summer day. As Kim Stanley Robinson says in “Nightmare on the Ice” in this month’s Smithsonian, “Flying to Antarctica from New Zealand is like changing planets.”

Recalling that its’ seasons are opposite ours, the icy world down under is fascinating to many and McMurdo Station on Ross Island is home to a thousand people each summer.
