Brown leads Lady Rangers over Jets

December 10, 2017

WICHITA, Kan. – The combination of outstanding defense and a spectacular afternoon of basketball from freshman Bailey Brown paved the way for a 65-41 victory over Newman University for the Northwestern Oklahoma State woman's basketball team.

The Lady Rangers surrendered a season-low 41 points to the Lady Jets while Brown led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight 20-plus point game. That defensive performance was highlighted in the third quarter of action, when Northwestern allowed just six points throughout the quarter while finally getting their offense on track in the second half to outscore Newman in the half by a total of 40-to-16.

A 25-25 halftime score wouldn't last long after a rough offensive first half for both units as the Lady Rangers capitalized on the Lady Jet's third quarter struggles and pieced together a 14-4 run in the final seven minutes of the quarter to build a 41-31 lead heading into the fourth. Northwestern kept the pedal to the medal and scored 24 points in the final quarter alone to finish off their second consecutive non-conference road win.

The Lady Rangers posted a 37 percent (20-of-54) shooting percentage from the floor and tacked on an additional 17 free throws while keeping up the defensive pressure throughout the evening and limited Newman to hitting just 14-of-65 shots from the field. Brown's presence in the paint helped Northwestern outrebound Newman as well, 48-to-41.

Fellow freshman Kinsey Neiderer made 4-of-11 three point attempts to total 12 points on the evening while junior Jade Jones posted nine points and five assists while getting to the free throw line eight times and connecting on six of those attempts. Forward McKenzie Billy pulled down five rebounds and posted five points as well.

The Lady Rangers will now enjoy nearly a month off after a busy stretch of basketball to wrap up the fall semester with a record of 6-4 (2-2 GAC). Northwestern will welcome Southern Arkansas to Percefull Fieldhouse on Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. when they return to conference play.
