Library plans for new children's activities

December 22, 2017

The Alva Public Library is looking to the future with new activities for children. Library Director Sandra Ott-Hamilton told the library board Wednesday that two Code-a-pillars have been purchased. These learning toys are designed to teach preschoolers early skills aimed at coding (writing programs for computers). The caterpillar-shaped toys feature segments that are connected in different combinations so the toy will perform different actions.

In addition, the library has purchased seven or eight new learning and logic activities that youngsters may check out at the front desk for after-school use.

Recently the children’s activities at the library have added a community service theme. The children decorated cookies for themselves and for police and fire department staff.

The library recently held another escape room program. Ott-Hamilton said the timing conflicted with other holiday activities but they still had a good response. A high school group that went through the room and successfully escaped said they were pleased with the challenges presented.

During the approximately three-week school break, the library will not hold children’s activities. They will resume when school is back in session.

The library will be closed Saturday, Dec. 23, and Monday, Dec. 25, so employees may enjoy a longer holiday break.

The library recently received state aid funding of about $8,600. With state budget problems, they were relieved the amount is only a little less than the previous year.

Library Maintenance

Ott-Hamilton reported the key lock for the library elevator has been installed. This lock is a new requirement. The second water fountain replacement has now been installed in the basement level. The two old fountains could no longer be adjusted and tended to shoot water over the floor.

Library Stats

Ott-Hamilton says the holiday season means a small decrease in checkouts of books and e-books by adults. However, juvenile book checkouts tend to increase. The library enrolled 14 new patrons in November, handled 625 research requests and hosted 18 meetings.

The library had 210 internet users and 786 wireless users during November.
