ENID, Okla. – The Alva High School boys extended their winning streak to seven games on Thursday after taking down the Perry Maroons 62-43 in the opening round of the Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm. Alva moved its record to 8-1 on the season.

On Friday, the Bugs will have their hands full with four-time defending tournament champion Kingfisher. Tip for the second round contest is scheduled for 5:10 p.m.

From the opening tip, the Alva boys had no troubles scoring the basketball. Mitchell Meyer started posting the points just 30 seconds into the game with a pair of free-throws. Following a mini five-point spurt by Perry, Lane Scarbrough drained back-to-back three pointers from the corner to give Alva an 8-5 lead.

The Bugs weren't finished separating themselves from their opponents. Including Scarbrough's early six points, Alva went on a 14-0 run in the first quarter. Meyer had six easy points in the stretch, while T.W. Beiswanger found Jacob Faulkner for a layup.

Eventually, Dalton Rose added his game total of two points at the buzzer to close after coming away with an offensive rebound. Alva went to the second quarter holding on to an 18-9 spread.

The long-range shooting continued for the Bugs in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Meyer started the second with a three-pointer, assisted by Beiswanger, and Scarbrough answered a Perry three-pointer with back-to-back shots from behind the arc of his own, stretching the lead to 15 at 27-12.

However, the early points off threes for the Bugs were the only offense they could get going in the second. Perry chipped away throughout the rest of the first half, cutting the lead to 29-21 heading into the third.

The Bugs stretched their lead yet again to 14 points with an 11-3 run over the first five minutes of the second half, capped off by a Beiswanger drive down the left side and layup to bring the score to 40-26. Off a turnover, Scarbrough found a sprinting Ethan Flynt on a fast break for a layup, and Cade Madsen added a layup late in the third to make it a 44-29 game heading into the final quarter.

Scarbrough finished the contest with 18 points, converting four of Alva's six three-point baskets. Overall, the scoring was fairly balanced with Meyer scoring 13 points, Flynt adding eight points, Beiswanger with five points, Faulker with four points and Madsen and Faulker recording two each.

Alva was ultimately able to clear its bench in the fourth quarter, giving many of the junior varsity players an opportunity at varsity time in a tournament atmosphere. Dylan Whitely picked up four points in the fourth quarter, Reece Martin knocked down a three, Garrett Ritter had a pair of free throws and Gavin Perez tacked on a late free-throw, en route to the final 62-43 outcome.
