Colyer leads Kobach in fundraising in Kansas governor's race

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer raised more money than any candidate of either party in Kansas' 2018 election for governor, easily outdistancing Kris Kobach, who is widely considered the front runner in the GOP race.
Two other GOP candidates, Ken Selzer and Mark Hutton, contributed substantially to their own campaigns but still raised more from outside sources than Kobach, according to campaign reports filed Wednesday.
Colyer, a Johnson County physician, raised $632,068 last year, with only $2,000 donated from the Colyer Family Trust, The Lawrence Journal-World reported . After expenses, his campaign has $548,802 cash on hand.
Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State who has gained national attention for his work on immigration laws, reported raising $354,732 in 2017, with no personal contributions or loans to his campaign. He has $260,902 cash on hand.
Selzer, Kansas' Insurance Commissioner, showed $713,482 in contributions, $285,700 of which he contributed himself. After expenses, Selzer has $668,604 cash on hand. And former state Rep. Mark Hutton of Wichita showed he contributed $200,000 of the $581,636 in contributions to his campaign, leaving him with $393,073 in cash on hand.
On paper, Republican Wichita businessman Willis "Wink" Hartman, the head of Hartman Oil Co., reported the most funds raised — more than $1.83 million — but he contributed $1.68 million from personal loans or business interests he controls, meaning he raised $145,661 from other sources. The other major GOP candidate, former Johnson County Rep. Ed O'Malley, of Wichita, reported raising $218,362, all from outside sources.
Greg Orman, a Johnson County businessman who is running as an independent, also reported strong fundraising. He raised $452,931, with about $17,000 in in-kind contributions to his own campaign but no direct contributions or loans. He has $440,700 going into 2018.
All four major Democratic candidates raised less than any of the Republicans. None made donations or loans to their own campaigns.
Former Rep. Josh Svaty of Ellsworth reported the highest total among Democrats with $192,545 in contributions. But Sen. Laura Kelly of Topeka, who entered the race less than three weeks ago, raised $155,691. House Minority Leader Jim Ward of Wichita reported raising $90,535 and former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer raised $45,470.
