Convicted felon charged in gun possession

A man from Capron told law enforcement he thought the prohibition on a felon owning a gun didn’t apply to long guns.

Monty Eugene Long, 44, of Capron was charged Jan. 10 with possession of firearm after former felony conviction. The crime is punishable by imprisonment for one to ten years.

According to court papers, on Oct. 17 Waynoka Police Chief Ted Woodhead was contacted by the Gloss Mountain Gun Store in Waynoka. He was told Long had come into the store with a bolt action rifle and wanted a scope for it. The store clerk asked Long if he was a felon, and he said yes but non-violent. He bought a scope and left. The store’s surveillance camera had footage of Long with the gun in his hand.

Woodhead ran a criminal background check that disclosed Long was convicted of omitting to provide for minor child, a felony, in Woods County in August 2006.

Woodhead went to Long’s residence and explained why he was there. Long said he had the gun in the store that morning. He said he was going to use the gun to hunt coyotes while his heifers were calving. He said he was a felon but thought he could have a long gun.

Long said he had taken the gun to a friend to have the scope put on it. Woodhead retrieved the gun and placed it into evidence. A short time later Long came to the police department and advised Woodhead he would turn himself in when the charges were filed.
