Bugs baffle Newkirk in 62-20 blowout

ALVA, Okla. – The Alva Goldbugs got an opportunity to rest players before heading into the Cashion County Line Tournament this weekend, as the Bugs dominated the Newkirk Tigers at home, 62-20. Alva improved its record to 10-3 on the season.

After blowing out the Tigers on the road the previous Thursday, 73-37, most fans expected another easy victory. But there was no denying the hunger the Bugs had coming off its third loss of the year to Blackwell on Saturday.

Coach Shane Feely's defense didn't let up, even with the junior varsity players getting the majority of the time in the second half. The Bugs didn't allow the Tigers to score in the third quarter, finally breaking through with 2:30 left the in the game its first basket of the second half.

The Bugs dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Tigers 41-21 in the game. Newkirk only pulled down two offensive boards all game, both coming in the final quarter of play.

Nearly every Goldbug who saw time in the game scored a basket, and only Mitchell Meyer reached double figures with 13 points. Meyer was coming off a tough two game stretch in which he scored just four points in eight quarters of play last week. He was held scoreless in the first Newkirk contest.

Lane Scarbrough and Dalton Rose both contributed with eight points. Scarbrough set the top of the game from the opening tip ad he corralled the ball and drove in for a layup with just seconds off the clock. Scarbrough was also involved in one of the highlights of the first quarter as T.W. Beiswanger found him in the middle of the lane for a lob and layup off an inbound play.

Late in the first quarter, Rose came up with a steal near midcourt, finding Ethan Flynt streaking up the floor for an easy layup, to cap and 18-4 first quarter output. Flynt finished with seven points on the night.

The Bugs continued to stretch its lead in the second with a jumper from Meyer from the left side, followed by a Davion Murrow steal and fast break. Murrow was fouled on the layup attempt, but knocked down both free-throws.

Scoring off the opening tip, Lane Scarbrough (24) skies for a layup as lothers ook on in preparation for a rebound on Tuesday as the Goldbugs hosted Newkirk. The Bugs had no trouble with the Tigers in the matchup, rolling to a 62-20 victory.

Newkirk snapped that 10-0 run with a basket, but Flynt started yet another run with a three-pointer to make it 27-6. Alva outscored the Tigers 10-6 in the final 5 minutes of the second to take a 37-12 lead into the break.

The third quarter was all Bugs as the home team outscored Newkirk 13-0. The quarter was Rose recorded six points in the third, including a jumper in the paint. But the quarter was highlighted by a pair of fast break layups off turnovers for Dylan Whitely, one of the more enthusiastic players on the team.

Alva forced the Tigers to turn the ball over 20 times in the game, seven of which came in the third quarter.

Carson Gaisford got in on the action in the varsity game in the fourth with a fast break layup following a steal by Garrett Ritter. With 3:49 to play, Gavin Perez sank a three pointer, before the Tigers scored five straight to make it 59-17 at the 1:45 mark.

The Bugs reached the 62-point mark in the final minute of play on a three-pointer by sophomore Cooper Sneary.
