Encourage one another
January 26, 2018
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
The way to a man’s heart might be through his stomach, but the way to everybody’s heart is through their ego. I should know. I’m a preacher.
Just last week, I had not one, but TWO opportunities to have my hat size increased. The first came from one of my students in “New Testament Survey.” I often give the students a heads up when my books are free on Kindle. To be truthful, I give a lot of people a heads up, since my goal is to give away as many books as possible. So far, with the help of my Facebook friends, we’ve given away a little over 4,500 books. However, my students are not usually as excited about reading another book – they stay pretty busy. So, I was a bit surprised when one of my scholars asked how and when I wanted them to submit their book report over “Lost and Found – Six Things Lost in the Garden but Regained in Christ” (the title is only slightly shorter than the book). I was so pleased that they read the book, I could hardly reply.
Then, as a recurring treat, members of the College Hill Church of Christ, where I preach, have adopted a compliment from one of my favorite sisters, now gone to glory. She once told me that when I preach, I paint a picture. Folks, you could tell me I was better looking than Brad Pitt and I wouldn’t glow more.
But enough about me ... for now. What kind words have you been thinking but not saying? Are there folks in your sphere of influence that could use a healthy ego boost? There’s no time like the present. Send a note. Make a call. Paint a picture.
See you Sunday.
