GODDARD, Kan. (AP) — On the morning of Jan. 21, 1985, 14-year-old James Alan Kearbey walked into Goddard Junior High School armed with an M1A .308-caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .357-caliber Magnum pistol.

He killed one person, principal James McGee, and wounded three others — two teachers and a student.

The Wichita Eagle reports that it is the only fatal school shooting in Kansas history, and it led to a change in the state's judicial process related to prosecuting juveniles.
