Strong winds fan flames in fire north of Alva

Strong wind gusts spread smoke from Thursday afternoon's grass fire north of Alva.

High wind speeds and dry vegetation made perfect conditions for wildfires in the area Thursday and Friday. The Oklahoma Mesonet shows no rainfall for Woods County in the past 30 days.

Maximum wind gusts recorded on Thursday, Jan. 25, were 36 mph at Alva, 41 mph at May Ranch near the Kansas border and 47 mph at Freedom, the highest shown for the entire state on the Mesonet site. It was about the same on Friday with Alva's highest wind speed at 44 mph, May Ranch at 41 and Freedom at 46 mph.
