Golden Suns come up short against No. 10 SWOSU

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Despite Cheyenne North's 16 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (16-3, 12-3 GAC) fell 74-62 to No. 10 Southwestern Oklahoma State (20-1, 15-0 GAC) on Saturday.

Arkansas Tech returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 8, as the Suns host Southern Nazarene in Tucker Coliseum. The Great American Conference contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Southwestern Oklahoma State outscored the Golden Suns, 20-15, in the first quarter, but a 15-2 run in the second period gave Arkansas Tech a 32-26 advantage with 2:22 until halftime.

The Bulldogs took the lead again, 35-34, with 25 seconds left in the second quarter, until a free-throw by Kylie Laddtied the score at the break.

The third quarter featured five ties and four lead changes, the last switch coming after a SWOSU three-pointer with 1:06 to play. The final minute of the period proved scoreless, sending the Golden Suns into the fourth trailing, 53-52.


Southwestern Oklahoma opened the final 10 minutes with a 7-1 run. Two free-throws from Jacie Higgins with 2:22 remaining pulled Tech within three points, but the Bulldogs scored the final nine points of the contest to escape with the victory.

NOTABLES

The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Golden Suns.

Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field, but SWOSU netted 10 three-pointers while Tech was limited to just three. Arkansas Tech held the advantage from the free-throw line, knocking down 13-18 while Southwestern converted on 6-9 free-throws.


The Golden Suns turned 13 offensive rebounds, four by North, into 17 second-chance points.

North's six blocks are a season high, and her three assists also led the Golden Suns. Jayana Sanders followed North with 12 points, and Kylie Ladd added seven.

Lyrik Williams scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
