As Elon Musk launches a sports car into orbit, I was reading with interest an article in AARP Bulletin about the best ways to buy a car. “Express Auto: a better way to buy a car” may be the only option if you have poor credit, but it's a catchy slogan that has stayed with me. Many people dread the task of vehicle purchases because a vehicle is just a tool to them, a painful need that requires service and insurance, but a much-needed appliance that depreciates from the moment you buy it.

Once presidential candidate Ross Perot said you should buy what appreciates and lease what depreciates. Cars...
