Hillcats Split at UCO Festival on 2 Late Home Runs

EDMOND, Okla. –The Rogers State softball team used a late home run to win, 6-4, over host Central Oklahoma, but two late home runs from Southeastern Oklahoma State downed the Cats, 4-2, as RSU split the first two games of the UCO Festival on Thursday (Feb. 8) at the Broncho Softball Field.

The Hillcats (4-2) did all of their damage at the plate on home runs, totaling six for all 10 runs today. Danelle Day knocked out two home runs, one in each game.

RSU 6, UCO 4

Sierra Skaggs hit a two-run homer to right field to propel the Hillcats the 6-4 win over the Bronchos. With the score tied at 4-4, she went deep in the seventh inning for the late lead.

RSU built a 4-1 edge before the Bronchos rallied to knot the score at 4-4. Merissa Smith opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run to left for a 1-0 score. After UCO tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning, Andrea Morales put the Cats up 3-1 with a two-run homer to left to make it 3-1. Another RSU home run, this time from Danelle Day, upped the advantage to 4-1 in the fifth inning.

UCO plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to even the score at 4-4. An infield single scored one run before a two-run home run down the line tied the game.

Allie McFetridge went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Smith finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Morales was 1-for-1 with two RBI and one walk.

Morales started in the circle, going 4.2 innings. Tailiee Reding came in for the final 2.1 innings and shutdown the Bronchos with only two hits allowed to register the victory.

The Cats built a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning against Southeastern Oklahoma State, but the Savage Storm tied the score at 2-2 on a two-run homer and then won on a walk-off two-run home run in the eighth inning to down the navy and red, 4-2.

Day knocked out her second home run of the day to put the Cats in front, 1-0, in the fourth inning on her shot to left field. RSU doubled the edge to 2-0 in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Reding to left.

SE's Elexis Watson evened the score in the bottom of the seventh with her two-run home run to left. The Savage Storm then won in the eighth on a two-run walk-off home run from Karsyn Brigance for the 4-2 final score.

Reding went the first 6.1 innings in the circle, allowing two runs on seven hits. Morales came in for the final 1.1 innings and gave up two runs.

The Hillcats close out the UCO Festival tomorrow (Feb. 9) against Washburn and East Central at the Broncho Softball Field. The first game against the Ichabods starts at 1 p.m. with the second game against the Tigers at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests.
