Henderson Falls 102-88 to Hot-Handed ECU

February 11, 2018

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State had five players score in double figures on Saturday afternoon, but East Central shot 59 percent from the field and ran away from the Reddies 102-88 at the Duke Wells Center.

The Tigers jumped on Henderson from the opening tip and got out to a 15-4 lead to begin the game. The Reddies (12-11, 7-10) responded and cut the lead down to 26-19 on a driving layup from Kaylon Tappin at the 11:20 mark of the first half. At that point, ECU (13-8, 11-6) put its foot on the gas, and used 16-2 run over the next six minutes to open up a 42-21 advantage. The Reddies again trimmed the deficit, this time down to 16 points with three minutes left in the opening half, but the Tigers ended the period with a flourish and carried a 57-35 advantage into the halftime break.

Henderson would not go away in the second and chipped into the lead little by little, eventually cutting the deficit down to as few as 13 points with 3:32 left to play on a four-point-play from Chris Parker. Although the Reddies out-scored the Tigers 53-45 in the final 20 minutes, the hole proved to be too deep to climb out of, as ECU never let Henderson come any closer and milked away the clock to preserve the win.

Josh Jones led the Reddies with 19 points and three blocks, while Parker chipped in 18 points and DJ Franklin had 17. Tappin finished with 12 points and four steals and Panaggio rounded out the double figure scorers for Henderson with 10 points and four assists.

The Reddies shot 44.6 percent from the field, hit eight 3-pointers and finished 22-of-27 from the free throw line, but East Central's hot hand was too much to overcome, as the Tigers shot 59.3 percent from the field and hit on 13-of-23 attempts from 3-point range in the win.

Henderson's next game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Arkansas-Monticello in the Duke Wells Center.
