Tigers nearly upset top ranked Statesmen

February 11, 2018

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Baptist baseball team fell by a single run for the second consecutive game this week after a 3-2 loss to the number one team in the country Delta State on Friday afternoon.

The Ouachita (2-4) pitching staff did a great job of limiting a potent Delta State (3-1) offense. The Statesmen came into Friday afternoon's game averaging 10.3 runs a contest. After being shutout in their first contest by Lynn, Delta State won their next two games by a combined score of 31-15.

The first two innings of the ball game for the most part went three up and three down. In the top of the third inning Justin Nussbaum leadoff with a bunt single. Jason Popovich then singled through the right side to move Nussbaum over to third base. Emil Ellis grounded out to short but Nussbaum came in to score the first run of the game.

Delta State would hold a 1-0 advantage over Ouachita until the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning and the bases loaded Clay Casey stepped into the batter's box and delivered a two RBI single into left field to give the Statesmen a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning the Tigers looked to be in prime position to get on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and no outs in the inning Victor Draijer (The Netherlands) came up to bat and smoked a ball down the left field line. Unfortunately, the Statesman's third basemen snagged the ball out of the air and stepped on third for a double play. Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) struck out swinging to end the inning.

After a quick top half of the eighth inning the Tigers offense came back up to the plate. Austin White (Arkadelphia, Ark.) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Tyler Riebock (Rockwall, Texas) crushed a no doubt home run over the left field fence to bring Ouachita within a run of the Statesmen.

Logan Huneycutt (Arkadelphia, Ark.) doubled in the next at bat, but was stranded as the inning ended with a fly out to right field. The Tigers went down in order in the bottom half of the ninth inning.

Delta State's Hayden Davey picked up his first win of the season. Davey pitched 6.0 innings, gave up only 5 hits on the day while striking out 7 Tigers. Peyton White picked up his second save of the season despite giving up a 2-run homerun to Ouachita.

Tyler Duck (Flower Mound, Texas) was hit with the loss for the Tigers and he is now 0-2 on the season. Duck pitched 6.0 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits. Riebock recorded the only RBI of the game for the Tigers.

The Tigers will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow afternoon against Arkansas-Fort Smith. First pitch is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
