Eagle Times: The mystery key

February 15, 2018

My day was just starting and I figured it was just going to be the normal, slow and boring day I was used to having on a Saturday. I was just going to stay home and sleep, maybe watch a season of one of my favorite shows on Netflix, but I am glad I did not.

It all started with me just sitting in my bed that Saturday morning when my mom knocked on my bedroom door and pretty much begged to me run errands with her. I tried convincing her to let me stay, but she seemed set on getting someone to go with her.

After getting dressed we left the house and went to Walmart and picked up a few groceries. On our way back my mother saw a sign saying "Garage Sale, next right." Anyone who knows my mom knows that she'd never in a million years pass up a garage sale.

The house with the garage sale was down a private road with curves and beautiful scenery leading all the way up to the house. We pulled into their circular driveway, parked the truck, and walked up to the items they were selling.

My mother was fascinated by almost everything she saw regardless of what it was. The more time she spent looking at an item the more she had to have it. She picked up and examined every object there, picked her favorites and purchased them.

As my mom was buying her seventh object of the day, I spotted this little chest kind of hidden in the corner of everything. After analyzing the chest I felt fascinated by this brown box. I don't know what it was, but I just knew I had to buy it.

It didn't take much to convince my mother into letting me get that wooden chest. I might have slipped out, "Can I get ..." before she was nodding yes.

When we started loading all of our new treasure into the vehicle I noticed a little paper kind of poking out from the bottom of the chest. I didn't want my mom to see what it was, so I just loaded it up and secretly pulled the paper off when my mother walked off to the driver side.

The whole ride home all I could think about was reading that little piece of paper. I knew it was probably just something that did not really matter, like a page from someone's diary, but I still was filled with excitement.

As we were pulling into our driveway I barely let the car slow down before opening the door and unloading my new mystery gift. As I got to my room, I quickly shut and locked the door, making sure no one saw me. I grabbed the letter and the letter said, "I have written this letter to remind me of where all my buried valuables are. I have a map and the exact coordinates so that I will not forget." On the bottom of the chest was also a map with the coordinates and location marked by an X.

I immediately called my friends and told them about what had happened, and I even managed to get them to go with me. The location marked on the map wasn't real far from the house with the garage sale. We all decided that it'd be better to go at night so we weren't seen trespassing, so we gathered all the equipment we were going to need and waited till dark.

The sun started setting and we were on our way, walking through trees, mud and bushes. We cracked jokes the whole time as we normally do when we are all together. We were making each other laugh so hard we almost forgot about the key and the mystery location.

After an hour of being lost and two hours of trying to find the location we finally arrived at the coordinates that were written down. We didn't know exactly where it was until we saw a hollowed out stump with another chest. This chest looked a little nicer than the other one, but it was definitely older.

My friends and I imagined treasure or money from a bank robbery to be in the chest. We took bets about what was in there. For about 30 minutes we tried to guess what was in the box, and let me just say we were all wrong.

We opened the chest and what we found wasn't the least bit expected. We found a whole chest worth of antique collectable sport cards. The chest was filled to the top with them and they were all in pristine condition.

Now was the hard part. We brought bags, but there was no way we were getting all of these cards out on one trip. We tried carrying the chest, but it was entirely too heavy. We had to make more than one trip.

We made about four trips back and forth filling our bags plum full with not an inch to spare. By the time we got back from our last trip we were exhausted. Our legs could barely function and it was almost impossible to even sit up.

Regardless of being the equivalent to dead, we were content and we continued to crack jokes. We tried splitting the cards up before falling asleep, baseball cards in hand and everything.

Instead of sitting at home doing nothing on a beautiful Saturday, I went on an adventure with my good pals and had a day that I will definitely remember.
