ECU Baseball Falls in First GAC Game of 2018

MONTICELLO, ARK. – The East Central University baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision to Arkansas-Monticello in the first Great American Conference game of the 2018 season.
The Tigers (1-7, 0-1 GAC) recorded a total of seven hits, with sophomores Cale Ridling and Dakota Washington and senior Trevor Crone each garnering two hits and an RBI.
Junior Logan Lannon started the game on the mound and suffered the loss, throwing 6.0 innings. Lannon allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) and struck out two batters.
ECU started the scoring in the top of the first inning and added a run in each inning through the fifth. Riddling started the game by drawing a walk and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior Bryce Dimitroff. That allowed him to score when Washington singled to left.
The Tigers scored their run in the second when junior Josh Lincoln was walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and then a passed ball. Ridling then sent him home with a single to first for the 2-0 lead.
In the third, Washington led off the inning with a double and scored when Crone singled up the middle. The run in the fourth came after Lincoln walked, Ridling singled and Dimitroff doubled for the 4-0 lead.
The bottom of the fourth is when the Boll Weevils (5-2, 1-0 GAC) started to make a come-back, scoring their first two runs on four hits to cut the lead to 4-2.
ECU scored its final run in the fifth for a 5-2 advantage. Senior Zach Trueblood was walked, Crone singled and freshman Garrett Oldham reached on a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners. That allowed sophomore Ryan White to earn an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
UAM didn't score in the bottom of the fifth, but added two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and three in the eighth for a 10-5 lead.
The Tigers were then shutout in the top of the ninth, giving the Boll Weevils the 10-5 win.
The teams will finish the three-game series, Monday, Feb. 19 with a double-header starting at 11 a.m
