Offense Carries Bulldogs to Midweek Victory over UCO
March 1, 2018
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball got hits from eight of the nine in the starting lineup and scored 12 of their 15 runs on the day in the game's first five innings to defeat Central Oklahoma 15-8 in midweek action on a cloudy Tuesday in Weatherford.
After a clean first inning for Jose Laboy on the mound to start things off, SWOSU came ready to swing the bats in the bottom half of the first as the Bulldogs notched five consecutive hits to start the frame. Winning 4-0, Daniel Richardson concluded the first-inning scoring with his third home run in as many days – a two run blast to left center that give SWOSU a 6-0 margin.
Laboy continued to throw up zeros on the scoreboard on defense, while the Dawgs tacked on single runs in the second and fourth innings before blowing the game open by putting up a four spot on the scoreboard in the fifth. After five complete innings, SWOSU led the Bronchos 12-0.
After a flawless fifth inning by Justin Moreno out of the bullpen, Marion McLean came on in the sixth inning looking to continue the bullpen's success. McLean struggled however, walking the bases loaded before being replaced by Jesse Lee who then let in five runs (three of McLean's). Lee then gave way to Tyler Tuck who got the final out of the inning.
UCO scored another three runs in the eighth inning to make things interesting at 12-8, but the Dawgs got all three runs back in the home half of the inning to halt the Broncho momentum and all but put the game out of reach.
Offensively, SWOSU saw the ball well all day with 16 hits in just eight innings worth of at-bats. Bryan Miranda had a 4-for-5 afternoon, crossing home plate three times and driving in another pair of runs. Richardson tallied three hits in the contest including his long ball while Chase Duncan, Alex Pimentel, and Brady Burtner all added a pair of hits each.
Laboy failed to pitch five innings so he did not qualify for the win, but he gave SWOSU a solid start on the mound and struck out seven in 4.0 innings of work. Moreno and Brendan Peitsmeyer both pitched single innings without allowing a run out of the bullpen.
The Bulldogs (9-5, 5-1 GAC) have now won five straight games coming into their weekend conference series with East Central. SWOSU is set to travel to Ada, Oklahoma to take on the Tigers on Friday and Saturday in another three-game GAC series.
