1889 Institute releases 50-state tax and spending comparison

• Oklahoma is not a low-tax state

 


OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The 1889 Institute has published a short Fact Sheet, “Comparing Oklahoma Government Revenues and Spending.” Using federal data, the Institute compares states by looking at the percentage of personal income that is collected in state and local government revenues and that is spent in six broad spending categories.

They find that Oklahoma’s state and local governments:

• Collect 13.2 percent of Oklahomans’ personal income in taxes and fees, more than 11 other states, including Texas and Missouri.

• Spend a higher percentage of our income on higher education than 28 states....
