Hillcats Split with Lions in Thursday Doubleheader

 


FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Rogers State baseball team took game one by a 5-0 score, but fell, 12-2, in game two to split a nonconference doubleheader at UA Fort Smith on Thursday (March *) at Crowder Field. The Hillcats moved to 11-4 on the season.

RSU 5, UAFS 0

For his second straight outing, senior pitcher Spencer Bivenspitched a complete game shutout. This time the State College, Pa. product went the full 7.0 innings and registered five strikeouts and allowed only six hits, all singles. The Lions only had runners advance into scoring position in the fifth inning with back-to-back singles. With the bases loaded after another single, UAFS hit into a double play to end the only real threat for Bivens all day.

The Hillcat offense got to work early with two runs in the first inning. Brooks Douglass, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game, singled to the gap in right to plate Blake Chiaramonte and Zack Mann for a 2-0 score.


RSU added two runs in the fourth inning for a 4-0 advantage. Derek Brumble knocked a double to right to score Douglass for a 3-0 score, and Christopher Ford made it 4-0 with a double to left to score Brumble.

Grant Farris hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to up the lead to 5-0.

Ford and Brumble each went 2-for-3 with one RBI to go with Douglass' 3-for-4 performance.

UAFS 12, RSU 2

The Lions jumped on the Cats early with seven runs in the first three innings en route to the 12-2 victory in the second game.

In the second inning, the host team plated four runs with two RBI singles to take an early 4-0 edge. Three more runs scored in the third inning, including two on an RBI triple, upped the score to 7-0 after three innings.


Dylan Russell drove in the first run of the game for the navy and red with a single up the middle to plate Bradley Degnan for a 7-1 score.

UAFS totaled two runs in its half of the fifth inning to increase the edge to 9-1.

Mann plated the final RSU run in the sixth for a 9-2 margin.

The Lions finished with one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to end the game after seven innings at 12-2 due to the run rule.

Russell went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Degnan and Garrett Hall registered 2-for-3 performances at the plate.

Dawson Floyd of UAFS earned the win on the mound, pitching the complete 7.0 innings. He allowed eight hits and two runs with seven strikeouts.

The Hillcats and Lions conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday (March 9) at 1 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark. Live stats and video will be available.
