Storm Upset No. 25 Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene bounced back after a tough loss in the first game of a doubleheader at No. 25 Southern Arkansas, by knocking off SAU 3-2 in the nightcap.

In the second game, David Gustafson (3-3) tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts as he gave up just one run on two hits in 5.2 innings of work. Austin Cooper recorded his fifth save of the year as he did not allow a hit in the final one and a third innings.

Shelby Reese led the way as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Cole Wagner and Cooper each went 2-for-4.

SNU built a 3-0 lead through the first four innings and took advantage of four SAU errors. Tanner Maskey drove in the first run in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to score Cole Lee. SNU took a 2-0 lead in the second on a Mulerider error before Reese ripped a home run to left center to give the Storm the 3-0 lead.

SAU scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Cooper slammed the door with the bases loaded

In the opener all five of SNU's hits came from different players and four of the five were in the 2-5 spots in the lineup. Ryan Mills (2-3) gave up the loss after giving up eight runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.

The Muleriders scored one in the second and four in the third to take a 5-0 lead before SNU got on the board in the fourth. Shelby Reese drove in Emilio Escobedo to make it 5-1 before Austin Cooper singled to right center to make it 5-2.

Southern Arkansas scored five in the fifth and two in the sixth to push it to 12-2 before Cole Wagner hit second home run of the year with a solo shot to left center. SAU put the finishing touches on in the eighth with a solo home run as well.
