Storm Softball splits final day with Arkansas Tech

March 18, 2018

BETHANY, Okla. — In the final two games of the series with Arkansas Tech, Southern Nazarene closed with an 8-6 win, and a 9-3 loss at Cypert Athletic Complex on Saturday.

The Crimson Storm (9-15, 6-8 GAC) kept their hot bats from Friday's game in the opener, as they tallied 10 hits. Four players recorded at least two hits for SNU. Caitlyn Curlee went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored for the Storm while Riley Brown also went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Katelyn Brown finished 1-for-4 with the game-winning home run and two RBI's.

Brown also got the start in the circle for Southern Nazarene as the senior earned her sixth win of the year. She struck out four batters and gave up six runs, all earned in a complete game.

Much like Friday, Arkansas Tech got on the board first in the opener. The Suns pushed two runs across the board to take a 2-0 lead.

SNU cut the ATU lead in half, when Riley Brown ripped a single to right field to score Toilolo to make it 2-1 after three innings. The Golden Suns(20-8, 11-5 GAC) added a run in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 3-1.

The Storm came right back in the bottom of the fifth to score five runs and take their first lead of the game. Sauer got things started with a single that drove in Shumaker to make it 3-2, and then Riley Brown tied the game with her single to left field that scored Toilolo. A few batters later, Curlee slapped a double to left field that scored two runs to give SNU the 5-3 lead. Curlee then scored on a wild pitch to give the Storm the 6-3 lead.

Arkansas Tech needed at least three runs to keep the game alive in the top of the seventh, and that's exactly what they got. They pushed across three to tie it up 6-6 going into the bottom of the seventh.

All the Storm needed was one run for the win, and after Curlee singled to start the inning, Katelyn Brown cranked her second home run of the year to left field to give SNU the walk-off win.

The Golden Suns ripped off 16 hits in the second game, compared to seven for the Crimson Storm. Makayla Shonamon got the start for SNU and she took the loss, as she allowed six hits and two earned runs. Victoria Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while Jacey James and Sydni Toilolo each went 1-for-3.

Southern Nazarene took a 1-0 lead early in the final game of the series when Katelyn Brown singled in the second inning to score Kaley Knox. Brown went 2-for-3 at the plate with the RBI. ATU finally got going in the top of the fourth, as they scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead.

The Storm got one run back in the fifth inning, when Toilolo singled to score Shumaker to make it 5-2. ATU however, pushed right back in the top of the sixth with two more runs to make it a 7-2 lead for the Golden Suns.

Kai Sanchez scored Curlee on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3, but that was the closest SNU came. The Golden Suns tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to push it to 9-3, and the Storm couldn't get anything going in the last half-inning.
