Reddies' Bats Go Cold in Two Sunday Losses to SWOSU
April 15, 2018
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After slugging its way to two convincing wins Saturday, Henderson State could not get its bats going on Sunday, as the Reddies scored just three runs on nine total hits in the doubleheader, and dropped both games to Southwestern Oklahoma State to split the GAC series.
The Reddies' final home series of the season comes on April 27 and 28, when Henderson faces off with Southern Nazarene in doubleheaders at 4 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday.
GAME THREE: SWOSU 8, Henderson State 1
SWOSU had six extra base hits and limited the Reddies to just one run, as the Lady Bulldogs took the first game on Sunday, 8-1.
For the second time in the series, SWOSU got on the board first with a run in the top of the opening frame, but once again, Henderson had a quick answer. This time, the answer came from freshman leadoff hitter Madie Green, who launched her team-leading ninth home run of the season well over the wall in left center field to tie it up, 1-1.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped back in front in the third, after a stolen base and an RBI single gave them a 2-1 advantage. Moments later, Sidney Kirk made the hole deeper for Henderson, when she drove a two-run shot over the fence in right field to give SWOSU its largest lead of the series, 4-1.
The Reddies threatened in the fourth, when they loaded the bases with two outs. Pinch hitter Kaitlyn Felder put a good swing into the ball and sent it back up the middle, but the SWOSU shortstop made a great play to grab it and get her foot on the bag to keep Henderson from scratching a run.
SWOSU made the Reddies pay for not scoring, as the Lady Bulldogs tacked on four more runs over the next two innings to extend their lead to 8-1.
Facing a seven-run deficit, Henderson could not find an answer offensively, as the Reddies managed just two hits in the final three innings, and fell for the first time in the series.
The Lady Bulldogs had 12 hits on the day, and had more extra base hits than Henderson had hits of any kind. The loss for the Reddies snapped their nine-game winning streak at Dee White Field.
GAME FOUR: SWOSU 3, Henderson State 2
Down to its final strike, SWOSU got a bloop double to score two runs in the top of the seventh, which helped the Lady Bulldogs rally past the Reddies 3-2 and split the weekend series.
Henderson went ahead in the sixth, when the leadoff hitter Kailey Reese doubled to right center and advanced to third on an error by the SWOSU center fielder. Standing on third with no outs in the inning, Reese took advantage of a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat, and scored with heads up base-running to give Henderson a 2-1 lead.
After an error on the Reddies with two outs allowed the game to continue in the top of the seventh, SWOSU's Kinsey Skroh came up to bat with runners on the corners. Down to her final strike, Skroh blooped a ball in-between first baseman Alexia Lopez and right fielder Alexis Morton. Morton came sprinting in on the ball, which just barely stayed in fair territory, but her diving attempt came up empty, as the ball careened off of her glove. The unlucky bounce allowed both Lady Bulldog baserunners to score, which put them in front, 3-2. Stunned, the Reddies could not find an answer in the bottom half, as they went down in order to end the game.
Reese was the lone bright spot for Henderson in the tough loss, as she produced three of the Reddies' four hits in the game with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate. She also scored a run and had the only RBI of the afternoon.
Henderson was doubled-up in the hit column by the Lady Bulldogs for the second-straight game and amassed just five base runners in the contest. The Reddies finished 9 for 49 as a team at the plate in the two games on Sunday.
