Early Lead Evaporated in Bulldog Loss at OC

April 19, 2018

EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball led Oklahoma Christian 8-1 after the middle of the fourth inning on Tuesday night, but surrendered 11 of the game's final 12 runs and eventually suffered a 12-9 loss to the Eagles.

The loss gives the two teams a midweek series split this season, with each having a home victory to their credit after SWOSU edged OC 5-1 back on March 20 in Weatherford. The Dawgs close out their midweek schedule an even 4-4 in non-conference games played during the 2017-18 season.

Alex Pimentel provided the offense plenty of support against Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday night at Dobson Field, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of home runs and doubles and six RBIs. He accounted for over half of the hits SWOSU collected on the night as the Dawgs were outhit 15-7 by OC.

SWOSU jumped out to an early seven-run lead (8-1) after four at-bats, but the Eagles never went away and chipped into their deficit by scoring in the fourth and sixth innings to get the game to a reasonable 8-5 mark.

Trailing by three runs in the seventh inning, the Eagles pieced together a seven-run frame with five hits and took advantage of three costly SWOSU errors during that time. Five of the seven runs that crossed home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning were unearned.

Pimentel drove in another run the following half inning, but that was the final scoring of the night for SWOSU.

Rogelio Sanchez finished as one of three other Bulldogs to notch a hit in the game when he blasted his third home run of the season immediately following Pimentel's first home run of the game.

Jose Laboy got the start on the mound and threw 4.0 innings while striking out eight and allowing two runs. Justin Moreno, Brant Millerborg, and Jesse Lee made appearances out of the bullpen and all allowed at least two runs each in their outings, but Millerborg surrendered the bullpen's only earned runs on the night.

SWOSU (21-18, 15-10 GAC) will look to bounce back this weekend on the road against Ouachita. The GAC series is scheduled to begin Friday (April 20) with game one at 2 pm and finish Saturday (April 21) with a doubleheader at 1 pm.
