April 26, 2018

HAYS, Kan. – Southeastern faced challenges from inclement weather conditions as much as from opponents, but despite the adverse conditions Southeastern's women were able to secure their third-straight team championship at the Ft. Hays State Rodeo in Hays, Kan.

The win allowed the women to extend their lead in the Central Plains Region standings with one rodeo remaining in the regular season.

The first round of competition brought much success for the women's timed events.

She came back and was unable to secure a qualified time in the finals, which took her out of the short go round of competition. Gurrola was able to secure a 6th place in the average during the competition on securing a first round win.

Over the weekend, Henderson was able to secure a 7.4 on Friday night in the first performance of the weekend, while Whiting followed with a run of 7.4 splitting their placing in the 4th and 5th place in the first round. The Savage Storm barrel racers may have faced the toughest road in the bad weather, but for the second competition in-a-row, they have proved they and their horses are versatile enough to compete on in all kinds of conditions.

Leading the pack out of 102 entries of barrel racers was Cierra Chapman, who stopped the clock with a 17.79 running the fastest time of the weekend. Close behind was freshman Peyton Glenn who was able stop the clock with the second fastest time of the weekend with a 17.85.

Qualifying for the finals was very challenging with rainfall after the first performance of barrel racing competition, and the finals proved to turn out much longer times due to Mother Nature and the ground conditions.

Glenn was the first up in the finals of the competition, and after stumbling at the first barrel she and her horse DD were able to hustle through the remainder of the pattern and complete a time of 18.52 which was good enough for a 4th place finish in the finals and secured her a 3rd place finish for the weekend.

Chapman came back with her horse Pistol, taking care of conditions with a business-like run of 18.63 with a 5th place finish in the short round of competition and a 4th place finish for the weekend.

Following the competition, Chapman is sitting in 2nd place followed by Glenn in 3rd place in the Central Plains Regional Barrel Racing standings.

On the men's side, Wyatt Rogers, a past CNFR qualifier in the bull riding, was able to clock a 5.3 in the steer wrestling event which brought him back in 7th place for the weekend. He had some tough luck in the finals with the steer, stopping the clock at 10.9 taking him out of the final round of competition.

With some misfortune in the bull riding, no Southeastern bull riders able to make the 8 second whistle, making next weekend's competition more important.

Currently in the bull riding competition Fulton Rutland is leading the pack in the Central Plains Regional standings. Fulton is looking for his second qualification to the College National Finals Rodeo with a previous 4th place finish in the bull riding at the CNFR. Rutland is hoping to secure his 1st place regional placing. He is followed closely by teammates Hayden Harris, a freshman looking for his 1st qualification, and Kolton White, who was previously the Central Plains All Around Cowboy last year and has qualified for the CNFR previously the past two years with a 5th place finish at the CNFR last year in the bull riding is looking for his 3rd qualification to the CNFR.
