Retirement brings time to create art

Though he may move a little slower, retirement hasn't changed Gene Dougherty's love of art. After teaching classes in drawing, watercolor and design for 31 years at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, he now uses his skills to create his own pieces.

Although Dougherty says he's probably best known for creations in his favorite watercolor medium, he's showing a sample of his oil paintings at the Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva this month. My brother, Roger Smith, was the art instructor at Tonkawa High School and knew Mr Dougherty well. I have a watercolor Mr D did that Roger had.
