55 teams depart Texas on June 19 for four-day race to Maine

• First stop is Alva

 

This map shows the route of the 2018 Air Race Classic, which begins in Sweetwater, Texas. Alva is the first stop, with the race ending in Fryeburg, Maine.

On June 19, 2018, more than 100 women pilots will take off on the adventure of a lifetime when the flag drops to mark the start of the 42nd annual Air Race Classic (ARC), the oldest airplane race of its kind in the United States.

Starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 55 small airplanes will launch full throttle, 30 seconds apart, down the runway at historic Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, where the Women Airforce Service Pilots trained for military service during World War II. From there, they will embark on a course that will take them 2,656 miles to Fryeburg, Maine, in just four days....
