According to police reports arguing about a move from one house to another escalated into a physical altercation that landed an Alva man in jail.

James Curtis Shramke, 39, has been charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation, a felony. This crime is punishable by not less than one year nor more than three years, or by a fine of $3,000 or both.

An affidavit in the case shows Alva Police Officer Brian File responded to a report of domestic violence at 6:12 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. Joy Doty reported her roommate, Vonda Kenmore, was choked by her boyfriend, Shramek.

Officer File talked with Doty and Kenmore who said Shramek was moving his belongings from his residence to Kenmore’s when they began arguing about living arrangements. Kenmore said Shramek told her to take him back home, but she said no he could just walk home. Kenmore told File that Shramek put one hand around her throat and squeezed. She screamed, and Shramek left.

File observed marks around Kenmore’s neck which he photographed. The women said another man, Fermin Gonzalez, witnessed the incident. Gonzalez was later located and told officers he saw Shramek put his hand around Kenmore’s throat, according to the affidavit.

On June 10 about 3:30 p.m., Woods County Deputy Adam Honeyman contacted Officer File saying he had talked to Shramek by cellphone. About 4:30 p.m. File and Honeyman went to Shramek’s residence to talk. He said he and Kenmore were moving his belongings into her house. Shramek told the officers Kenmore was getting mad about how he was packing and unpacking his belongings which caused an argument. He said he heard Doty say she was going to call the police so he left the residence.

File told Shramek witnesses saw him assault Kenmore, and she had marks around her neck. Shramek was arrested and taken to the Woods County Jail.
