Looking through the glass

Yesterday, my girls and I made a trip to OKC. The main reason for the trip was to fill up Binky’s bucket list for the summer by eating at Chuck E. Cheese. It was my fault. Being the gracious and good looking Papa that I am, I asked a 5 year old what she wanted to do (more than anything else) while she was waiting for school to begin in August. She had two simple requests: go swimming at Uncle Ray’s (done) and going to Chuck E. Cheese. She reminded me on several occasions that this was a REAL place that had games you could play and great PIZZA! She was partially correct. We ate. We played. We checked that item off the list.

Her mother’s list included a trip to the zoo. The Lord was kind and we enjoyed our afternoon, with reasonable temperatures and smallish crowds. Our only major problem was that we kept getting lost. Binky wanted to see the big cat exhibit, but we kept ending up at the flamingos. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but flamingos are far from ferocious. They just stand on one foot and look pink. Oh well; to each his own. We did, eventually, find the lions and tigers (missed the bears, “oh my!”) and made our way to the apes.

After several minutes of trying to “connect” with one of the chimps, I stepped aside and let Binky have a turn. She put her hand on the glass (don’t tell) and the chimp immediately gave her a high five. She tried again and the friendly fella’ fived her with a foot. This went on for several minutes while her mama, camera phone at the ready, recorded the temporary bonding ritual. When both human and ape were satisfied that they had done all they could do, separated by the glass, we headed for the car and made our way to Outback for supper. Great times!

Do you ever feel as if our worship is “through a glass?” There’s an obvious connection with the being on the other side, but we just can’t quite touch the divine? That’s OK. Paul felt the same way: “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known” (1st Corinthians 13:12). Keep reaching out. See you Sunday.
