Freedom hires new teachers

As the start of school is only about six weeks away, the Freedom School Board succeeded in replacing two teachers who resigned: Charlotte Selfridge, a longtime teacher, in a letter to the board said she is retiring. Another teacher, Penny Brewer, is moving to teach in a town close to her family.

After a 20-minute executive session on Monday night, the board agreed to hire three teachers: Sara Bowman, elementary; Jennifer Renken, elementary; and Scott Renken, high school. Bowman was offered the job pending board approval and the Renkens will be contacted Tuesday with the job offers. Bowman has accepted the offer.

The board approved using Tamara Link as an alternate minutes clerk in the event Patricia Dauphin, minutes clerk, is absent.

In a software lease, the board agreed to once again use Dibles, which is a method of meeting reading sufficiency testing. They also will continue to use IXL software. Principal Michelle Shelite said it is useful from kindergarten through 12th grade as a remedial tool for virtually all subjects taught. The cost is $800, but they saved $400 by renewing early.

The big three-door freezer in the cafeteria had a compressor go out. The board could replace only that part for $1,510, or they could replace all innards of the freezer for $2,162, or they could buy a new one in the price range of $5,000 to $8,000. The board elected the middle choice since it will come with a full warranty.

They also voted to change the sodium (or halide) lighting in the ag barn to LED. Superintendent James Miller said the replacement system will pay itself off in three years of energy savings. The cost will be $3,910. They had previously gone to LED in the gym earlier.

The superintendent was awaiting a quote on upgrading the fire alarm system. The board discussed purchasing a new master panel from Statewide Fire to replace the one in the superintendent's office. It will handle the old sensors, but give more capacity to add new sensors. The school had a fire scare the night of graduation in the high school building.

After quite a bit of discussion, the board changed milk and food vendors by going to Campus Smart, a statewide contract. The standard vendors, such as Hiland, reserve the right to change the price throughout the school year. The Campus Smart price stays the same regardless. Miller that the Alva schools use this system.

The ceiling in the old ag building is being removed. The BancCentral IT team has been working on the computer network for a couple of weeks. The new copiers are in and work great. They have asked for an estimate of putting an additional door in the ag building. The superintendent mentioned the photo of the gift of the truck from Sandridge was in the Freedom Call last week. He said it is a good truck, a 2011-12 Dodge 5500 with only 147,000 miles.
