Waynoka Police Officer Misty Smiley was dispatched to a fight in progress about 10:18 a.m. on June 16 in the 2200 block of Santa Fe Street. Smiley arrived to find the fight ended. A first responder on the scene called for an ambulance saying Mike Hood had been hit in the head at least twice with a metal pipe.
Smiley found Hood sitting on the front porch with a shirt around his head, bleeding from obvious wounds to his head and face. According to the court affidavit, Hood told her Steven Steffen hit him in the head with a pipe. Nelson was on the porch helping Hood control the bleeding. He said Steffen and Paige Hood were inside the house. He also reported he and Christy Hood saw Steffen hit Mike Hood with the pipe.
Officer Smiley knocked on the door and talked to Paige who said her dad Mike Hood had been beating on the door with the metal pipe. Smiley described her as visibly upset and crying. Smiley talked to Steffen who said Mike Hood walked up to the door of his residence with the pipe and was threatening to kill him. Park Ranger Rogers arrived and Smiley left him talking to the pair inside.
Smiley went outside and found the ambulance had arrived with personnel preparing Mike Hood for transport to the hospital. Smiley talked with several different people at the scene who said the fight began as a verbal altercation between Paige Hood and Steffen. Both were at Mike and Christy Hood’s house which is about two houses west of Steffen’s. According to the affidavit, Smiley was told they were at the residence consuming alcoholic beverages and were going to eat dinner together to celebrate Father’s Day. After the altercation began, Steffen supposedly left and returned to his residence.
Ranger Rogers told Smiley that Steffen had security camera footage of the incident. With Steffen’s consent, they reviewed the video and he gave them a digital copy. According to the affidavit, on the video Steffen is seen pulling into his driveway at approximately 10 p.m. Paige Hood is seen walking up to the residence as he pulls in. Paige enters the residence followed by Steffen and his son. Several minutes later, Steffen emerges with his son and tries to leave. Paige is seen going to the driver’s side door of Steffen’s vehicle and trying to pull him back out. Steffen exits and they go back inside.
About 10:06 p.m. Nelson arrived to break up the verbal altercation between Steffen and Paige. The altercation had escalated to pushing and shoving, according to the affidavit.
At 10:10 p.m. a vehicle arrives to pick up Steffen’s son. Steffen then locks Paige out of the residence. Paige Hood makes a call on her cellphone to her mother Christy asking for help getting into her residence.
According to the affidavit, Paige “is seen hollering and yelling at the front door for several minutes.” Mike Hood is seen coming down the sidewalk about 10:13 p.m. He is seen walking onto the front porch and kicking the front door two times. Paige and Mike exchange words. Mike returns to the front porch and is seen on the video picking up two large metal pipes. He is seen striking the wall to the left of the door with a pipe.
Steffen is seen opening the door, pulling Paige inside and taking one of the pipes from Mike. The two men are seen exchanging words at the door. Steffen points a pipe in Mike’s face and then shuts and locks the door.
Using a two-handed grip Mike is seen hitting the front door twice with the metal pipe. He then stands off to the side with the pipe raised over his shoulder. At 10:16 p.m. Steffen opens the front door, takes the pipe from Mike’s hand, and is seen striking Mike near his face with the pipe. Mike appears stunned and begins to fall off the porch. Steffen follows and appears to strike Mike in the head with the pipe at least two more times, according to the affidavit.
Steffen is seen going back inside while arguing with and shoving Paige. Christy Hood and Nelson arrive and force their way inside. Nelson drags Christy out of the residence. According to the affidavit, both Christy and Nelson enter the residence several times without being invited.
On Monday, June 18, Smiley met with Mike Hood at the police department to learn his side of the story. According to the affidavit, he told Smiley he had a lot to drink that night and the last thing he remembers is cooking food at his house. He said the next thing he remembered was being loaded into the ambulance.
