A man from Mooreland died Wednesday, July 11, after the pickup he was driving collided head-on with a semi. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Russell Weller Lewis III, 47, of Mooreland, was pronounced dead at the scene from trunk internal and leg injuries.
The fatal wreck occurred at 4:40 p.m. on State Highway 34, one-tenth mile south of U.S. Highway 183. The location is two miles southeast of Woodward.
Lewis was driving a 2004 Chevrolet pickup northbound on State Highway 34. A 2005 Kenworth driven by Jose Ayala, 57, of Woodward was traveling southbound on State Highway 34. The Lewis pickup went left of center, striking the Ayala vehicle head-on. Ayala was not injured. Lewis was pinned in the vehicle and extricated by the Woodward Fire Department using the Jaws of Life.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Ayala was wearing a seatbelt, but Lewis was not according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
