Lew Wallace lived an interesting life that saw him become successful in several fields. After practicing law for a few years, Wallace embarked on a political career. During the Civil War, he rose to the rank of major general in the U.S. Army. And he wrote several books as well.

In 1878 President Rutherford B. Hayes named Wallace territorial governor of New Mexico. Wallace held the position for two and a half years.
