The WHAM-O Toy Company is credited with creating the Hula-Hoop but if not for Joan Anderson, who was visiting her family in Sydney, Australia, in 1957, the craze may never have begun.

Offered to the American public in 1958, it was soon exported but was outlawed in some other countries for reasons such as “contributing to traffic accidents” in Japan; “pain in the neck, back, and abdomen” in England; and “awakening sensuality” in Indonesia.
