Stillwater creating memorial for homecoming parade crash

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Residents in Stillwater will soon have a place to pay their respects to those who died during a homecoming parade nearly three years ago.
The $100,000 Stillwater Strong Memorial is scheduled to be dedicated on Oct. 26, the Stillwater News Press reported.
The memorial will feature a 6-foot tall (2-meter tall) steel ribbon sitting on top of a concrete base with descriptions of the four people who died when a woman drove a car into a crowd of spectators. The land was donated by the city and will include trees, walkways, two concrete benches and a Stillwater Strong sign.
"It is really going to be a nice tribute," said Scott Petty, executive director of the Stillwater Medical Center Foundation, who wrote a book about the tragedy. The book's profits will help fund the memorial.
The 2015 incident occurred during Oklahoma State University's homecoming parade. Those killed were Nikita Nakal, 23, from India; 2-year-old Nash Lucas; and married couple Bonnie and Marvin Stone, both 65. Dozens more were injured.
Adacia Chambers pleaded no contest and received multiple life sentences last year.
The Stillwater Memorial Committee raised half the money for the memorial last year through a donation drive at the university's homecoming football game.
Survivors of the crash gathered Saturday for the second annual Cowboys Survivors Picnic. Annette Turner, a crash survivor who helped organize the event, said it's important to keep in touch with others who were impacted that day.
