Lawn care is so easy

August 17, 2018

Dear Editor,

Why does Alva look so crappy???

Our town has a lot going for it – the college, the downtown with pocket parks and green spaces, the murals, the new bank and the restored Runnymede are a few things.

However, weeds are out of hand – not six-inch weeds but six-foot weeds. Lawn care is so easy compared to earlier times. There are all kinds of chemicals and equipment available. The secret is taking care of it at the right time. A six-foot weed needs to be disposed of and leaves an unsightly stalk. Most of the time the people working in the yards are older people sometimes with a cane or walker.

Mowing the grass into the street is against a city ordinance, but I see lawn care companies and respectable citizens doing it all the time. What is so difficult about turning the mower around and going around two rounds? The residue is unsightly and promotes weeds growing in the street.

THEN there is the perpetual garage sale in the yards. What’s the deal about the stuff all over the yard?

Some people think that this is not my business but I think we need to take our city back. Thank you, Dale Dunnigan, for getting the ball rolling.
