Wonder Boys Golf picked first in GAC preseason coaches poll

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas Tech men's golf has been voted as the favorite in the Great American Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced Thursday.

The Wonder Boys totaled 76 points in the poll, including a conference-high four first-place votes. Southeastern Oklahoma closely trailed with 73 points and three first-place votes, while Henderson State garnered 65 points and three first-place votes. Harding and Southwestern Oklahoma tied for fourth in the poll, followed by Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Arkansas, Southern Nazarene, Northwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas-Monticello.

The 2017-18 Wonder Boys advanced to the match-place portion of the Division II National Championships for the second consecutive year, falling to eventual national champion Lynn in the quarterfinals. The Wonder Boys earned a spot in the national tournament after placing second at the GAC Championships, fourth at the Midwest/Central Region Championships, and tying for fifth in the stroke-play portion of the national tournament.

Arkansas Tech returns four golfers from last years roster, including Division II PING All-America Third Team selection Austin Gean. Gean averaged 71.83 strokes per round in 2018, 28th-best in Division II and the lowest average in Arkansas Tech history. He also finished in the top 10 in five of eight tournaments.

Four-time GAC Coach of the Year Luke Calcatera also welcomes back reigning GAC Freshman of the Year Jackson Marseilles and All-GAC Second Team member Shawn Tsai. Marseilles averaged 75.21 strokes per round this year. He finished in the top 10 in three of nine events, including a first-place finish at the Dave Falconer Classic, where he won by six strokes after scoring the fifth-lowest two-round individual score in Tech history. Tsai averaged 73.79 strokes per round, and he finished in the top 10 in three events.

Arkansas Tech opens the 2018-19 season in Daniels, W.V., as the Wonder Boys compete in the two-day Glade Springs Intercollegiate at The Resort at Glade Springs on Monday, Sept. 3.
